NEURO-OPTOMETRY

Neuro-Optometry

Neuro-optometric rehabilitation is a specialized treatment program for those who suffer a concussion, stroke, or other traumatic brain injury. Vision difficulties can range from mild to severe and are collectively known as Post Trauma Vision Syndrome (PTVS).

Did you know that 90% of patients with traumatic brain injuries suffer visual symptoms? Neuro-optometric therapy can help alleviate your visual symptoms due to PTVS.

Who Benefits

Any patient who has experienced a concussion, stroke, visual field loss, or other type of traumatic brain injury (TBI) may benefit from a comprehensive therapy program. Even patients who cannot participate in weekly office visits can still benefit from specialty tinted lenses and/or prism glasses (see "Treatment" below).

Common Conditions

Some common visual conditions that occur after a concussion or traumatic brain injury include:

  • Convergence insufficiency

  • Accommodative insufficiency

  • Oculomotor dysfunction

  • Strabismus ("eye turn")

  • Hemianopia (peripheral vision loss)

  • Photophobia (light sensitivity)

  • Asthenopia (eyestrain)

  • Visual motion sensitivity

Common Symptoms

Some common symptoms of PTVS include:

  • Double or blurred vision

  • Eyestrain and fatigue

  • Headaches that intensify with the use of eyes

  • Dizziness or nausea

  • Loss of place when reading

  • Difficulty tracking moving objects

  • Peripheral vision loss

  • Light sensitivity

  • Motion sickness

What to Expect for Testing

A neuro-optometric evaluation should be done by a residency trained doctor in visual rehabilitation. Often several visits are required for a complete evaluation of your ocular health and visual skills. Specialty tests may include fundus photography (i.e. a picture of the retina and optic nerves), peripheral vision testing, binocularity and depth-perception, eye focusing, and visual-perceptual skills. Results are then compared to established norms to identify any visual deficits.

What to Expect in Treatment

Sessions are scheduled once per week for 30 to 45 minutes. During this time, the patient undergoes a series of challenging exercises designed to enhance the visual system. Various instruments, computer programs, 3D glasses, lenses, and prisms are utilized in therapy. Patients typically require between 18 to 24 sessions.

In addition to therapy, many patients find relief through the use of tinted lenses or prism glasses. Tinted lenses (usually gray or rose-colored) block out a minor portion of light and thus help alleviate light-sensitivity or motion-sickness. Prism glasses are used to alleviate binocular stress and thus reduce eyestrain or fatigue.

Do I need a Referral?

Referrals are not required for a neuro-optometric evaluation.

Will Insurance Cover the Evaluation or Therapy?

Medical insurance will cover the initial evaluation as long as we are participating providers. You may be responsible for a copay, co-insurance, or deductible.

For vision therapy, everybody's policy is different. Some policies will cover 100% of the costs whereas others may cover only a portion. We will estimate beforehand what will be covered, so that you can make an informed decision before starting any treatment program
