Vision Therapy

Vision therapy is an evidence-based program of eye exercises designed to restore and enhance proper visual functioning. It's like getting "physical therapy for the eyes!"

Did you know that 80% of learning comes through your vision? If you suspect that you or a child may have a vision problem, call us today for an evaluation.

Who Benefits

Any child or adult who struggles in school, work, or sports due to visual difficulties may benefit from vision therapy. Vision is more than "20/20" and many tasks require efficient visual skills to be successful.

Age of Patients

Vision therapy is for both children and adults. The youngest age is usually 5-years old. There is no upper age limit. Some conditions that were thought "untreatable" past a certain age (such as lazy eye) have have had great success in our program.

Common Conditions

  • Convergence Insufficiency

  • Accommodative Insufficiency

  • Oculomotor Dysfunction

  • Amblyopia ("lazy eye")

  • Strabismus ("eye turn")

  • Visual-Perceptual Difficulties

  • Post-Trauma Vision Syndrome (PTVS)

Common Symptoms

  • Eyestrain or fatigue

  • Blurry vision

  • Double vision

  • Headaches

  • Poor tracking (loses place when reading)

  • Poor reading fluency or comprehension

  • Dislikes reading

  • Short attention span / "smart at everything but school"

What to Expect for Testing

A vision therapy exam is approximately 60 minutes. The doctor will assess the patient's eye tracking, focusing, and binocular systems to make sure they are working efficiently. The results are compared to established norms to identify any visual deficits.

Some children have visual-perceptual difficulties which may also interfere with reading and learning. We can provide special testing to identify and treat any reduced areas.

What to Expect in Therapy

Therapy sessions are scheduled once per week for 30 minutes. During this time, the patient undergoes a series of challenging yet fun activities designed to improve his or her visual skills. Various instruments are used such as stereograms (3-D images), computer modules, focusing lenses, and prisms. We keep each session fun! Patients usually require 12 to 18 sessions for a complete program.

Do I Need a Referral?

Referrals are usually not required for evaluation but we encourage you to contact your medical insurance first.

Will Insurance Cover Treatment?

Medical insurance usually covers the initial evaluation if we are participating providers. You may be responsible for a copay, co-insurance, or deductible.

For vision therapy, everybody's policy is different. Some policies cover 100% of the costs whereas others may cover only a portion. We will estimate beforehand what will be covered, so that you can make an informed decision before starting any program.
