VISION THERAPY

Vision Therapy

Vision therapy is an evidence-based program of eye exercises designed to restore and enhance proper visual functioning. It's like getting "physical therapy for the eyes!"

Did you know that 80% of learning comes through your vision? If you suspect that you or a child may have a vision problem, call us today for a diagnostic evaluation.

Who Benefits

Any child or adult who struggles in school, work, or sports due to visual difficulties may benefit from vision therapy. Vision is more than "20/20" and many tasks require efficient visual skills to be successful!

Age of Patients

Vision therapy is for both children and adults! The youngest age usually begins at 5 years old, although toddlers may benefit from home exercises done with the parents. There is no upper age limit for therapy, and conditions that were previously thought untreatable past a certain age (e.g., lazy eye) have great success in our program!

Common Conditions

Some of the most common conditions we treat include:

  • Convergence Insufficiency ("eye teaming")

  • Accommodative Instability ("eye focusing")

  • Oculomotor Dysfunction ("eye tracking")

  • Visual-Perceptual Deficits

  • Amblyopia ("lazy eye")

  • Strabismus ("eye turn")

  • Post-Traumatic Vision Syndrome (PTVS) / Concussion

  • Visual Conditions Associated with ADHD, Autism, and Other Learning Disabilities (LD)

Common Symptoms

Some common symptoms include:

  • Eyestrain

  • Blurry vision

  • Double vision

  • Headaches

  • Poor tracking (loses place when reading)

  • Poor reading fluency and/or comprehension

  • Dislikes reading

  • Short attention span / "smart at everything but school"

What to Expect for Testing

A vision therapy exam takes 30 to 60 minutes. The doctor will assess the patient's oculomotor (eye tracking), accommodative (eye focusing), and vergence (eye teaming) systems to ensure they are all working properly. The results of testing are then compared to established norms to identify any visual deficits.

Some children may also have visual-perceptual delays which could be interfering with reading and learning. These patients may require a second visit to undergo standardized visual-perceptual testing.

What to Expect in Therapy

Therapy sessions are scheduled once per week for 45 minutes. During this time, the patient undergoes a series of challenging yet fun activities designed to improve his or her visual skills. Various instruments, computer programs, 3-D glasses, lenses, and prisms are utilized. We try to keep each session interesting and fun! Patients typically require between 12 to 24 sessions for a complete rehabilitation.

Most patients will feel a significant decrease in symptoms by the halfway mark and a total elimination of symptoms by the end of the program.

Do I Need a Referral?

Referrals are not required for a vision therapy evaluation.

Will Insurance Cover the Evaluation or Therapy?

Medical insurance usually covers the initial evaluation if we are participating providers. You may be responsible for a copay, co-insurance, or deductible.

For vision therapy, everybody's policy is different. Some policies will cover 100% of the costs whereas others may cover only a portion. We will estimate beforehand what will be covered, so that you can make an informed decision before starting any treatment program.
